Whether you’re looking to Wander the West, Meander the Midwest, or Explore the East, this guide is your home base for high-value itineraries and the hidden gems I’ve discovered along the way.

The “Wander with KT” State Superlatives
These are my personal gold-medal winners for states that offer the biggest adventure for the smallest investment. Many of these places I’ve been to more than once and can say, with confidence, that they are affordable travel must-visits!

Best State for the “Mighty” View on a Budget: Utah
While some parks get crowded, my Mighty 5 Itinerary shows how camping and packing your own meals makes seeing these world-class landscapes surprisingly affordable.
KT’s Pro Tip: Check airfare costs for both Salt Lake City and Las Vegas to get the best bang for your buck!
Vibe: Rugged, wide-open, and full of free and dispersed camping opportunities.
Cheapest State for “Old World” Charm: New York (upstate)
Everyone thinks of NYC, but Upstate is where the adventure value is. Between free Adirondack campsites and the “mini-Europe” vibes of the Finger Lakes, you get massive beauty for a fraction of city prices.
KT’s Pro Tip: Visit in autumn for the most stunning fall foliage views and incredible temperatures!
Vibe: Four-season beauty, everything from mountains to waterfalls, and a lot of small town charm.

Most Surprising “Value” State: South Dakota
The Badlands and Black Hills offer scenery that rivals the foothills of the Colorado Rockies, but with significantly lower costs for lodging, food, and entry fees. It’s truly a road tripper’s paradise!
KT’s Pro Tip: Don’t hate me… but you really only need to spend time on the Western end of the state. Fly into Rapid City, SD!
Vibe: the perfect blend of rugged Wild West, stunning natural beauty.
Best State for “Freebie” Adventure: Virginia
From the free-entry museums in nearby DC to the stunning (and affordable) hikes in Shenandoah, Virginia is the ultimate “smart traveler” state.
KT’s Pro Tip: Dip into West Virginia if you have the opportunity! Visit New River Gorge, Seneca Rocks, and Blackwater Falls.
Vibe: A combination of historic Southern charm, a rustic mountain feel, and diverse regional cultures.

The Hidden Gem “Adventure” State: New Mexico
Known as the “Land of Enchantment,” New Mexico is an adventurer’s dream that won’t break the bank. You get high-desert magic and incredible food for a fraction of the cost of more “famous” western destinations.
KT’s Pro Tip: Fly into Denver, rent a camper van, and head south to make the adventure more affordable!
Vibe: A truly unique blend of history, art, and stunning high-desert landscapes inspired by ancient Native American Pueblo cultures.
