What Shendandoah Entrance is Best?

This all depends on where you’re coming from. You can adjust your Shendanaoh National Park Weekend Itinerary to match the entrance of your choosing, however, the entrances closest to your accommodations with the Thornton Gap or Swiftrun Gap Entrances.

  1. Front Royal Entrance Station: The most northern entrance of the park, the Front Royal Entrance is located in Northern Virginia.
  2. Thornton Gap Entrance: Centrally located on the northern end of tthe park, you can access this entrance from the east or the west!
  3. Swift Run Gap Entrance Station: Centrally located to the south, this is the closest entrance to Big Meadow Lodge and Campground.

Shendandoah National Park Itinerary for A Perfect Weekend

Here’s a three-day Shenandoah National Park Itinerary that includes bits and pieces of the Appalachian Trail, the park’s highest points, and prettiest waterfalls. We’re telling you everywhere you need to stop along the scenic Skyline Drive and the best ways to experience the surrounding Shenandoah Valley.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

Arriving in Shenandoah National Park is a joy! As you approach the standout ridge in the Appalachian Mountains, you’ll be filled with excitement to climb up into the steep, narrow sandstone ridge to the incredible 105-mile Skyline Drive.

Views from our Skyland Resort Room

Morning

Upon arrival, enjoy a scenic drive along Skyline Drive to enjoy popular overlooks. Definitely stop at Hazel Mountain Overlook at mile marker 33,

Skyland Resort

Sitting at 3,680 feet, the highest elevation on Shenandoah National Park’s scenic drive, Skyland Resort provides sweeping vistas of the Shenandoah landscape. With horseback riding opportunities, easy access to hiking for every level of hiker, a camp store, and the delicious Pollock Dining Room, this is an excellent accommodation option!

Big Meadows Campground

Centrally-located at mile 51 in Shenandoah National Park, Big Meadows Campground provides easy access to many of the most popular destinations in the Park. All sites have to be reserved in advance and include a place for a tent or RV, a fire ring, and a picnic table; sites are shaded by tall trees and grasses with access to restrooms.

Skyline Drive spans the entire length of the park and includes a ton of places to stop and enjoy. From short hikes and viewpoints to visitor centers and camp stores, you can find plenty of ways to stop and enjoy epic views into the valley on either side.

Views from Dark Hollow Falls in the Spring

Afternoon

Did somebody say waterfall hike!? Because we have two options for you. Waterfalls are always a crowd pleaser and a great way to start your Shenandoah National Park weekend.

Dark Hollow Falls

1.6 miles | 583 feet

Don’t let the mileage fool you! You’ll spend the first half of this trail hiking downhill to views of a lovely cascading waterfall. The return hike is entirely uphill. Although the trail itself is not difficult, know that all of your elevation gain will occur in about .8 miles. You will be enjoying this view alongside other hikers! It’s a popular trail at nearly all hours of the day.

Rose River Falls

2.4 miles | 656 feet

The trail begins at Fishers Gap, mile marker 49.5, on Skyline Drive. The Rose River Trail heads downhill until it arrives at Rose River and continues on to the falls. The 67-foot tall waterfall is a great place to stop and rest before the steady uphill climb leading back to the road. Rose River Loop Trail does connect to Dark Hollow Falls Trail if you’re looking to knock both waterfalls off!

If you’re looking for a hke that is a bit more strenuous but still leads to a waterfall, check out Lower Whiteoak Falls. You access the trail from Weakly Hollow Road which is not accessible from Skyline Drive. From Big Meadows Lodge it takes about one hour and 15 minutes to reach this trailhead.

This same road will also give you access to one of the park’s moat popular hikes, Old Rag. If you’re interested in Whiteoak Falls and hiking Old Rag, known for its rock scrambles and stunning views, you should save this combo for tomorrow!

Day 2: Hiking and Wildlife

Get an early start today and get some hiking in! If Old Rag is at the top of your list, I would recommend heading that way early and starting your hike. Remember that this hike is located on the Eastern side of the ridge and requires you to exit from the Swiftrun Entrance/Exit or the Thornton Gap Entrance/Exit to access the trailhead.

Hawksbill at Sunrise

Morning

Spending your day on Skyline Drive? Here are two perfect morning hikes you can choose from or complete them both! Hawksbill is a dream for sunrise, so take that into consideration if sunrise hiking is your thing. We’re going to share some of Shenandoah’s most popular hikes with you as well as a hidden gem trail or two!

Hawksbill Summit

1.6 miles | 666 feet

All things considered, this is a fairly easy trail for the highest peak in the park (4,049 feet)! As you near the summit you’ll see a lean to, continue on to the viewing platform. The stone overlook on top of Hawksbill offers a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the Shenandoah Valley, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Virginia Piedmont.

Mary’s Rock

2.7 miles | 751 feet

You can reach Mary’s Rock via the Appalachian Trail Southern Approach by parking at the Meadow Spring Parking area and taking the Meadow Spring Trail. You can also experience more of the AT and ridgeline by starting farther south; we began our hike at Pinnacles Picnic Grounds and had ourselves a lovely 7-mile hike!

Hawksbill is fairly short and sweet so it is possible for you to do both of these popular trails in a mornng if you’re an avid hiker and/or an accomplished mover with determination.

Views from Mary’s Rock!

Afternoon

Lay low this afternoon and learn a little bit more about Shendandoah National Park! You’ll want to conserve some energy for a sunset hike to top off your trip.

Dickey Ridge Visitor Center

Located just inside the northernmost entrance, Dickey Ridge Visitor Center. It includes exhibits, an orientation movie, a bookstore and maps. More importantly, park rangers are on-site to answer any questions! We love visitor center stops to learn more about the park’s we visit and how they came to be. If you don’t want to head this far north, Byrd Sr. Visitor Center is also a great place to do some learning!

Ranger Program

Ranger-guided programs provide visitors with the opportunity to explore the wonders of Shenandoah with a Ranger’s knoweldge base. Discover stories of Shenandoah’s past, take a guided hike, or learn about the animals and plants that thrive here. Be sure to look at the calendar to learn more about the events that are offered through the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons at Shendandoah National Park!

Head up Stony Man for sunset. Stony Man faces west and at 1.5 total miles and 321-feet of elevation gain making it the perfect sunset hike! There’s no better way to end your trip than with stunning sunset views.

If you’re not down for hiking, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset from Franklin Cliffs Overlook at mile 49. Take a seat on the stony ledge and enjoy a cold one while watching the sun go down over the Shenandoah Valley.

Day 3: Departure and Memories

Hopefully you feel like you’ve made the most of your weekend Shendandoah National Park Itinerary since we’re departing today.

Morning

Want one last hike? Here’s two shorter hikes that will positively add to your Shenandoah National Park Itinerary and create lasting memories!

Bearfence

1 miles | 242 feet

This is one of the most popular hikes in the park and for good reason! After parking, cross Skyline Drive and follow the blue blazes of the Bearfence Mountain Trail to the summit. It’s a fun hike full of rock scrambling before you reach the summit with incredible 360-degree views!

Blackrock Summit

1.1 miles | 180 feet

If you’re exiting to the south, this is a great hike to add in before heading home. One of the best short hikes in the park leads to the summit of Blackrock. It features amazing views of the Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain. This hike also includes a little light rock scrambling, enjoy!

Not down for one last hike? Take a final scenic drive along Skyline Drive in the direction of your departure stopping at any missed overlooks along the way.
